Chloie Leverette & Christopher "Gage" Daniel went missing on September 23, 2012 after a house fire in Unionville, TennesseeChloie Leverette & Christopher "Gage" Daniel - September 23, 2012 - Unionville, Tennessee (Bedford County) - Endangered Missing

Chloie, 9, and her brother Christopher, 7, were last seen at home by a neighbor on September 23, 2012 at approximately 6:30 p.m. Chloie and Gage lived with their grandparents at 730 Kingdom Road, Unionville, Tennessee. That home was destroyed by fire later that night at approximately 9:30 p.m. After an extensive five day search, multiple fire experts have processed the scene and are unable to
locate evidence that Chloie and Gage were victims of the fire. The location of Chloie and Gage are unknown at this time.

Chloie Leverette:
Case type - Endangered Missing
Sex - Female
Race - White
Hair color - Brown
Eye color - Hazel
Height - 4'8"
Weight - 75 lbs

Christopher Daniel:
Case type - Endangered Missing
Sex - Male
Race - White
Hair color - Brown
Eye color - Hazel
Height - 4'0"
Weight - 50 lbs

The children vanished.

After nearly eight months of chasing down leads, law enforcement has found nothing to suggest they are alive. After a hellish fire consumed their home and experts literally sifted the sodden black ashes of the ruined structure, not a trace of evidence was found to show that they died there.

Chloie Leverette and her younger half-brother Gage Daniel simply disappeared in the smoke-thickened air Sept. 23 when a fire of unknown origin engulfed the Unionville farmhouse where they lived with their grandparents, Leon and Molli McClaran, who died in the blaze.

Chloie, then 9, and Gage, then 7, were last seen at their grandparents’ home about 6:30 that evening, a little more than three hours before the fire was reported by neighbors, Bedford County officials said at the time. When investigators — including a team with experience searching for human remains in the World Trade Center wreckage — completed painstakingly combing the site, they had found the McClarans’ remains but no shred or scrap or anything to prove the children died with their grandparents.

The mystery touched off the usual online speculation among amateur sleuths who post their fantasies on the Internet after a tragedy, suggesting the children had been kidnapped or fallen victim to some other sort of foul play, or that they simply walked away from the house and have never been seen or heard from again.

While law enforcement experts often develop theories of a case to guide them in investigations, they need hard evidence to close their inquiries.

In the disappearance of Chloie and Gage, they have none.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which has been involved in the case since it started, is continuing to chase down any tips that come in, TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm said. But in a carefully worded statement about the investigation, Helm seemed to hint that the agency is not optimistic about the outcome.

“We are not trying to form theories,” she said. “We have no evidence that the children died in the fire, so in case they’re still out there we will leave the investigation open.”

Then she added, “No leads have indicated that they did not die in the fire.”

But two other principals in the investigation, and an outside expert who consults internationally as a forensic pathologist, said the unhappy likelihood is that the children perished in the fire with their grandparents, hard evidence or not.

“My personal feeling is that they were in there,” said Bedford County Fire Chief Mark Thomas, but “we really should have been able to find something” of their remains.

Thomas said local investigators were assisted by forensics teams from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and Middle Tennessee State University, who were joined by TBI agents and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, “so we brought in a lot of highly experienced and qualified people to help us with this scene.

“They assisted us in going through the debris and we used a special type of shovel and sifter,” Thomas continued. “We would go through debris, and when we’d get complete we started that all over. And we did that four times with different agencies so you had different eyes looking at it.”

The only evidence that offered any hope was one tiny tooth that was taken for examination by a pathologist in Nashville who “couldn’t determine if it was human or animal,” Thomas said.

“I just know there were a lot of man hours put in and if those children had been in that home we should have found something from them,” Thomas said. But, he added, “My gut feeling tells me they were in there, but that’s just a gut feeling.”

While state fire investigators ruled the cause of the fire as undetermined, another Bedford County official offered some details about the McClarans’ home and lives that suggested what may have started and fed the blaze.

Bedford County Sheriff Randall Boyce said his investigators think the fire was accidental.

“Molli was on oxygen, was taking morphine for cancer and smoked in bed constantly,” Boyce said. “Plus that, it was a cool night and they had several space heaters through there.”

Thomas said investigators discovered no evidence that oxygen had been used in the home.

Boyce said the couple were hoarders, with uncountable items filling their home — both in the basement and above — making it difficult to walk through the rooms. One of their basement collections was significant.

Leon McClaran had once worked for a propane company and collected castoff tanks when he came across them, Boyce said. After the fire, investigators found evidence that 35-38 propane tanks were stored in the basement, some still holding fuel, Boyce continued.

An open door in the basement acted as a draft, sucking air and heat from the fire up to the children’s bedroom, directly above, Boyce said.

The fire was so intense that when it was finally brought under control, not one wall was left standing, the sheriff said.

“There wasn’t a piece of that house left,” he continued. “There was nothing, absolutely nothing. All that was left of that house was a little bit of plastic dripped from the vinyl leaves. The rest fell in the basement and burned up.

“We shot 63,000 gallons of water under high pressure in there, so you could imagine what that did to the ashes,” Boyce said. “You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out.”

The ashes were entirely black and fill the basement in a sodden heap four feet deep, the sheriff said, and the fire was so intense that firearms and other metal objects had melted.

After giving him authorities’ description of the fire and their findings, The Daily Herald asked Dr. Werner U. Spitz if he could offer an opinion on the disappearance of Chloie Leverette and Gage Daniel.

Spitz, who continues to be called in for consultations in the U.S. and other countries, is one of the country’s most experienced and esteemed forensic pathologists and author of the textbook widely regarded as the most authoritative book on the subject.

Now a pathology professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, during more than 50 years in the science Spitz has given expert testimony in many high-profile cases, including the wrongful death lawsuit against O.J. Simpson, the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., the death of Jon Benet Ramsey and many others. He has personally performed more than 60,000 autopsies, according to his biography.

When asked for any opinion he might have of the Bedford County fire, Spitz had just returned from consulting on an arson fire in a trailer in New Mexico that was apparently set to destroy the bodies of two gunshot victims inside.

One of the victims had weighed as much as 290 pounds, he said, and the other 180.

When their remains were discovered, he continued, “one weighed 8.1 pounds and one weighed 9.9 pounds. I wouldn’t have believed that. It was a strange case.”

Turning to the missing Bedford County children, Spitz said that because of their size, “I can understand that in a fire like that, the kids were burned to ashes.

“To think that they’re alive, I would think that’s doubtful,” he continued. “I would not be surprised that they actually disappeared. Maybe you’d find very small pieces. But I would wonder too about them disappearing. Other stuff would fall on them, and (investigators) would probably not find them.”

Attempts to reach family members of the McClarans and their grandchildren were unsuccessful.

Boyce, who stopped short of voicing his opinion about the missing children because some relatives are still holding out hope that they live, concluded, “Do I wish we could find them? Of course. I pray at night myself hoping we can find them. But there’s absolutely no evidence whatever that they’re anywhere but in that house.

“We’re continuing to look,” the sheriff continued, “and I suppose we’ll be looking forever.”
