#Missing Richard William Moss
Date last seen May 25, 2017 06:00
Montara, California/County San Mateo

Missing person was last scene at his residence by his mother.

6/13/17
The search for Richard Moss has stretched from ground, to air to sea. Yet there are still no clues as to what happened to the 22-year-old Montara resident who appears to have vanished on his way to work more than two weeks ago.

Now, the Sheriff’s Office and Moss’ family are asking for anyone with information to come forward.

Richard Moss left the home he shared with his mother on the San Mateo County coast early in the morning May 25. Before heading to work as an apprentice for a local electrician, he stopped at a Pacifica McDonald’s for breakfast then drove along the winding Devil’s Slide stretch of Highway 1, according to his father Dan Moss. His son never arrived at work.

“It’s just hard to imagine what happened, I just don’t know. We’re trying to find him,” Dan Moss said. “We’re devastated.”

With no leads and no indications of foul play, the Sheriff’s Office is asking for anyone with information to come forward, or if he’s alright, for Richard Moss to check in with his family.

“We just want to make sure that he’s OK, that’s our concern. We want to make sure that he’s safe,” said sheriff’s Detective Sal Zuno.

Richard Moss is described as white, with hazel eyes, dark brown hair, standing about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 150 pounds. His 2001 blue Hyundai Tiburon, with a California license plate 5DWY562, is also missing.

After talking to friends and family, detectives have not found any indications of reasons why Richard Moss would vanish. However, because he’s an adult, he may be missing voluntarily and detectives are not actively searching, although the case is still open and they’re interested in any leads, Zuno said.

Distraught, Richard Moss’ family and friends have begun to take matters into their own hands, starting social media campaigns and actively searching for the young man. The Montara resident lived near the Devil’s Slide area, where Highway 1 winds along the steep coastal bluffs before veering inland toward the Tom Lantos Tunnels.

Since Richard Moss’ car hasn’t been found, friends and family have begun to question whether he may have crashed in some remote embankment near Highway 1. Volunteers have been searching on foot, with four-wheel vehicles, in the sky via drones and even diving in the ocean to search for wreckage near the bluffs, his father said.

“We have to do something to find Richard,” Dan Moss said.

He even consulted a psychic, which wasn’t much help but he felt he had to try. After flying to California from his home in Hawaii, Dan Moss chartered a helicopter to search a rural area near the highway where his son was last seen alive. Since the family started to raise awareness through fliers and on a Facebook page titled “Finding Richard Moss,” the coastside community has rallied to help in the search, Dan Moss said. But there’s a lot of ground to cover, some remote and hard to get to, in a coastal area where cars can crash unnoticed, he said.

They started a GoFundMe campaign, which they’re using to hire a private investigator to help piece together what might have happened, Dan Moss said.

The day before he disappeared, Richard Moss reported being ill and called in sick to work. But later that evening, he spoke with his boss to confirm he’d be coming in the following day. Piecing together information gathered during the investigation, Dan Moss said his son drove to the Pacifica McDonald’s for breakfast around 7 a.m. A surveillance camera then spotted Richard Moss driving alone, southbound through the Tom Lantos Tunnels just a few miles from his Moss Beach job site at 7:12 a.m. He never made it to work, Dan Moss said.

His mother had last seen him in the morning and when she returned later that evening, both Moss and his car were gone, Zuno said.

He left his toothbrush and even his wallet at home. According to friends and family, there was nothing unusual about his demeanor or anything that would have explained his disappearance. Dan Moss noted while his son had once headed to Santa Cruz for a three-day weekend without telling anyone when he was 20, there’s no reason for him to have vanished like this.

Dan Moss said he was stunned when the Sheriff’s Office first told them there was little to be done. Since then, he’s pleased the community and detectives have continued in their efforts to search for the young man.

Zuno noted there’s no indication Richard Moss was taken, and the 22-year-old didn’t hang out with a bad crowd. There’s been no activity on his debit card since his disappearance, he added.

Richard Moss grew up on the San Mateo County coastline and attended Half Moon Bay High School for a few years before moving to Hawaii. His father described him as a trusting young man who enjoyed skateboarding.

“Richard was just a great kid, there’s nobody that didn’t love him. He didn’t have a mean bone in his body,” Dan Moss said. “As far as what we’re going through, it’s just completely devastating.”
